Should we drive or take the train?

S

Sam

Train is easier for me.

The assistant is listening and will not jump in.

How to design it

  1. 1

    Name every speaker

Put a name and a picture on each line, so people know who said what.

  2. 2

    Let the assistant wait

It answers when someone asks it, not after every message.

  3. 3

Say who it is replying to

A small label shows which person the answer is for.

  4. 4

    Say what it can see

Tell the group what the assistant can read and what it saves.

Do and avoid

Do

  • Show a clear mark on the assistant's lines.
  • Let anyone in the group ask it a question.
  • Say what is saved for the group, with a way to undo.
  • Keep private chats separate and labelled.

Avoid

  • Do not answer every message in the group.
  • Do not mix one person's private notes into a group reply.
  • Do not hide what the assistant can read.
  • Do not reply without saying who the reply is for.

Why it works

In a group, people already take turns and read the room. An assistant that jumps in feels like a loud guest. When it speaks only when asked, and the group knows what it can see, people feel safe sharing.
